The Earth Charter

This month’s topic will examine some of the AAAS discussions on turning knowledge into action. We will introduce the idea of BOTGs to those who have not heard of them before. In addition, we will examine the social and ethical changes that may have to occur in order to effect change.

One of the presentations at the AAAS meeting was given by Mary Anne Tucker and dealt with the Earth Charter. This is an important document for us at Sustainable Path Foundation. In fact, we included some of it in our mission, vision and values.

You can read the document online and find out how it has been used the last few years.

The Earth Charter posits a different way of using knowledge to accomplish action than our culture has promulgated over the last 200-300 years. But it is based on principles elucidated in such documents as the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

How do we use these principles to make useful things happen? How can greater scientific knowledge help? Is a sustainable society even possible? What will its ethics ne like?

Just some of the questions I am sure we will tackle on March 23. See you there. Just click the orange button above.
