What’s the grid?

Our next Idea Club will be June 22 and be devoted to ‘Getting Off the Grid." If anyone would like to lead the discussion please let us know.

So, what is the grid and why would anyone want to get off of it? The grid is the set of power lines and power generators that mainly serve to bring power to our homes. While totally removing one’s abode from any connection to power from the outside world, including heating and air conditioning is possible, it is impractical and expensive for most people to accomplish.

What this discussion will examine  are ways to reduce our need for centralized power. It will deal with alternative sources of energy as well as some aspects of building design.

Discussing some aspects of a smart grid may be appropriate, as getting off the current grid could entail creating a better, more efficient one.

See you in a little over 3 weeks.

“Off the Grid” is not just about power. It is also about information. Can you imagine a web search for your name (or SSN) that had no matches?
