Our Story
The Sustainable Path Foundation story began in 2002 when Immunex was being acquired by Amgen. The founders were a group of people who had contributed to Immunex’s successes through their knowledge and skill in science, drug development, and business. Their goal was to carry on the shared culture of scientific expertise and a collaborative work ethic, while combining it with philanthropy to create an organization based on scientifically informed giving and problem solving.
First known as “The Yet To Be Named” or YTBN Foundation, then the Seattle Biotech Legacy Foundation, and finally renamed more aptly as Sustainable Path Foundation.
Since 2002, we have funded over $1.8 million to a variety of projects such as:
- Citizen scientists collecting data to monitor wildlife and environmental health
- Research that helped establish strong requirements in WA State for makers of children’s products to disclose harmful chemicals, and
- An initiative to change national accounting standards to recognize publicly owned watersheds, like the Cedar River Watershed, as an asset on public utilities’ financials.
We have also regularly convened a series of seminars and conversations on regionally important topics. Some of these have included:
- One of the first events to address the impacts of Ocean Acidification in the Puget Sound,
- Biomimicry principles and its applications in our built environment,
- Biocarbon storage potential in our forests, farms and parks, and
- Green chemistry
